Copenhagen 1 - June 13-15
Put Bertha back into a box and flew to Copenhagen, 55.7 degrees north and Fahrenheit to start the adventure. Easy flight and reassembly in the flat lands of Northern Europe. Some sun, some rain, some wind. 100% protected bike lanes from the terminal, to the city, to my airbnb. Tons of bikes of all types and you gotta move, and stay in your lane - no tolerance for amateurs. Went to glyptoteket museum (free, courtesy of my airbnb host) with nice winter garden and roman/greek, danish sculpture. Language here totally foreign, fortunately english everywhere too. Pizza and tuborg along the river, trying to stay awake until 8pm...no way I'll make 10pm sunset or 4.25am sunrise. 10 miles
Copenhagen has been ranked the best biking city in the world, with 50% of people commuting to work by bike. Bike lanes, dedicated intersection crossings and parking are everywhere, very reasonable. But dont walk in the bike lanes - youll get run down. Did a walking tour of the inner city; much of Copenhagen is landfill so buildings aren't very tall or very old due to fires - including one set by the British as part of their war with napoleon. Learned that the bluetooth logo is made from the runes of the initials of the last danish viking king - Harald Bluetooth. Couldn't get into noma or geranium 3* Michelin restaurants, so ate lots of pastries and free samples, sized that a usa store would never consider. Drinks and dinner with Daniel Friedman to end the day. 33k steps over 15 hours, still light 11pm
Last day with daniel, another big walking day. Checked out black diamond library and jewish museum during the rain delay. Danish Jews fared well after denmark was invaded in spring 1940. Able to live unimpeded until oct 1943, and then mostly evacuated to (neutral) sweden. After the war, they mostly reclaimed their businesses and property. Walked through christianshavn and the lakes district, finished up in vesterbro for drinks and dinner. 38,054 steps - new record.
